ID-100219628Are you sick of going into the studio and never coming out with a product that sounds like what you hear on the radio?

Zedd Records doesn’t operate like most Toronto recording studios because 100% of the projects we take on are focused on developing commercial quality songs. A lot of studios and producers will work with just about anybody that can come up with the money. We only work with artists who are committed to success because we can both make more money in the long run if your songs are good enough to get placed on TV shows, movies and commercials, and impress the organizations that provide valuable grant funding to jump start your career.

We charge a flat rate for song production that includes all of the following services from award-winning songwriter and producer Mark Zubek:

  • Songwriting
  • Music production
  • Musical arrangement
  • Session work (all real instruments and electronica)
  • Tracking
  • Editing
  • Mixing
  • Mastering

“From introducing me to the whole process behind songwriting, production and licensing, working with Mark was the stepping stone that boosted me into an industry that I can now call my full-time career.” – Dervla

The Zedd Records Recording Process

Step 1: Write A “Hit-Quality” Song

We don’t start recording until the song is ready. If you want the experience of a professional co-writer on your side, we will team you up with Mark to make your existing song perfect, or write an entire new song from scratch.

Zedd Records had over 90% of their artists receive grant funding in 2013 and the reason was that they all started with great songs.

Here’s an example of a rough iPhone recording of an idea Ange Alero brought in. He recorded it in his car after it came to him at a red light and never refined it past that quick burst of creativity.

We worked together to turn that 16-second iPhone recording into a full song. Here’s how it turned out:

Step 2: Build The Track

Should the song have a tight and danceable groove or is it meant to be a powerful ballad with acoustic based instruments? We work tirelessly with you to build the instrumental track of your song so that it fits your vision and sounds unquestionably world-class.

Daniel Robinson is a great example of a talented artist, singer and lyricist who didn’t have a background playing musical instruments, but had a clear, creative vision for how the music should sound when complete. Not only did we successfully work together to build the perfect track that fit his vision, our work was internationally recognized after winning the $8500 Grand Prize for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Step 3: Record The Vocals

The vocal is the single most important element of modern commercial music, and we treat it that way in the Zedd Records’ process. As a singer, you have a story to tell, and an emotion that you want the listener to feel right along with you. Whether you’re trying to impress fans, label executives or music supervisors to get your music licensed, the most significant “make or break” factor is the vocal performance.

You will receive guidance in your lead vocal performance and your backup arrangements too. Even if you have no prior experience with singing harmonies, you’ll be amazed at how good you can sound with a bit of guidance in creating background parts and choosing the right notes to sing. Recording studio environments can be notoriously intimidating, but with us you’ll find getting that perfect vocal performance is painless – we have made the process really comfortable without sacrificing an ounce of quality.

“Working with Mark was completely effortless. He was able to understand exactly what I wanted in my song and turn it into a hit. The song we made together won the International Songwriting Competition and placed Top 30 in the EMI MOArtist Competition, and the success is thanks to Mark. I can’t wait to work with him again!” – Victoria Leone

Slide2Step 4: Edit – Mix – Master

This is where all the recorded tracks come together to make a polished masterpiece that’s ready for commercial release and radio play. Professional editing, mixing and mastering is usually an additional expense over and above studio recording costs, but it is included with every song produced by Zedd Records. We know that your song needs to sound just as good as the major artists you’re competing with on hit-radio – it needs to sound like a million bucks!

Step 5: Promote!

Unlike other recording studios, Zedd Records aggressively promotes every one of our artists’ songs to music supervisors for TV and film licensing, as well as assisting in the grant application process.

In 2013, over 90% of Zedd Records artists received some form of grant funding (FACTOR, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council) to record a single or an album. There are millions of dollars set aside in government money every year to help developing artists just like YOU grow your career, but you have to know how to impress them. We’ve got this down to a science and can help you every step of the way.

With little in the way of record sales these days, TV and film licensing provides a significant opportunity for creating income for independent artists. Contrary to what you might think, independent artists have a huge leg up with licensing because they are less expensive to license compared to major artists – but this can still easily add up to thousands of dollars for a single opportunity.

We have a proven track record at getting unknown artists HUGE placements on TV shows like Entertainment Tonight, Degrassi: The Next Generation and with major brands such as Coca-Cola, Hasbro and Pringles. In 2012, 60% of Zedd Records artists got their songs placed on a TV show, movie or commercial.

"Working with Mark has been a great experience. He makes the creative process simple and easy. With Mark's help, I successfully acquired a FACTOR grant for the development of my second song. He is positive, professional and has helped put me on the path to becoming the artist that I want to become."
